I’m taking a break from making videos until the new year
it’s been a bit of a slog this last year and a bit. i noticed in last year’s august things changed, and i didnt realise it at the time but thats when youtube’s ceo died and was replaced with someone else.
youtube is different right now and whilst every how-to and hack channel is trying to convince me all the changes are in small channels’ favour, it doesn’t feel like it as a small channel that was doing decently well before… and now struggles to get consistent views
i really enjoy the content i have been making this year as well with more of a focus on media stuff generally, and some fun deeper dives into specific tropes or patterns i noticed (sometimes those do well, sometimes they don’t) with minimal updates on my personal health journey… but there’s very little interaction online now… i feel like haters in particular used to be more prevalent but people commenting in general used to happen more often so i don’t really know what people are interested in or engaging with. in some ways it’s nice, its peaceful but it means i rarely get genuine comments either. all things I’ve gone into detail about re: SEO and social media changes in the past on this blog you can read more about it.
i have some things i need to wrap up before 2026 arrives linked to my art business, benefits, moving (which is still in limbo), looking after my dog and mum, looking after myself, and trying to cultivate some more friendships locally… I’m starting a newsletter so you can subscribe to that to keep updated on everything I’m up to. you’ll get a free printable of one of my art pieces for signing up.
As we all know, social media and the internet at large is becoming quite hostile to small businesses and creators of all kinds when it used to be an equaliser of opportunity.
Many creatives have been turning to mailing lists to keep in touch with their audiences due to algorithms hiding posts and social media sites deleting entire accounts… so I hope this can help keep you updated on me, my work, and where you can find what I’m working on generally. its an everything newsletter.
but also generally i think i need to take some time away from my favourite hobby (youtube) so i don’t start hating it. i need to go do what someone recently called my ‘side quests’ like my archery, which whilst its not been smooth sailing by any means… has really positively impacted me. so i wanna go and do more of these weird and random hobbies. you know me. but also of course i have my ACE grant for my writing and i need to spend some time focusing on that.
I have an idea of what i’d like to be doing in the new year with the channel, but im going to mull it over and make a plan and see if it’s doable for me in practice.
