Hi pals

I recently came across the official YouTube Movies and TV channel with a mixture of paid for and free films you can watch. So I went through and saved the films that are available for free (with ads) that I’d give a watch.

Don’t forget to give my videos a watch and subscribe to my channel where I talk about media!

Divergent

I think all of the films are available on YouTube to watch for free with ads, and sometimes you just need an easy place to watch trash (yes I think Divergent is trash lmfaooo) The not-as-decent copy of The Hunger Games, Divergent is a post apocalyptic world where everyone who is leftover in this area of the world, which I don’t remember being explained in any capacity and I read the first few books too, are split into 4 factions. The smart people, the hippies, the daredevils and the charity workers. At some point in late-teenhood, you’re assessed to see if you’re divergent but it’s kinda covered as ‘seeing what faction you would best fit,’ but at the end of the day it doesn’t actually matter what it says anyway, you can go be whichever you want on special decision day! And Tris, who comes from the charity worker faction, decides she is doing to be a daredevil! And basically everyone in charge is awful, The End.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate

This is one of many random choices on this list, I basically had this idea a long while ago that I wanted to try watching certain actor’s entire filmography and rank them. I never got round to it basically but one actor I wanted to cover was Hilary Duff, and I had no idea she did a horror film?? Will it be any good? I don’t think so honestly. But I love watching shitty films too. “Pregnant with director Roman Polanski’s child and awaiting his return from Europe, 26-year-old Hollywood actress Sharon Tate becomes plagued by visions of her imminent death.”

Nerve

I watched this film a while back and picked up the book secondhand this year (for research…) I think the concept was interesting, but a lot of YA film takes on dystopian themes or topics don’t usually do the theme justice. Also I hate Emma Roberts. Basically, Nerve’s plot becomes more and more relevant everyday honestly. Teenagers are playing an online game of truth or dare which is live streamed and manipulated by the viewers. It has some interesting and pretty visuals, and obviously the game is dangerous.

Uptown Girls

Uptown Girls is an iconic film featuring Brittany Murphy (RIP) and Dakota Fanning. “A grown-up woman who kept her childish instincts and behavior starts working as the nanny of an 8-year-old girl who actually acts like an adult. But everything ends right-side up.” With an iconic meme format we still use today, it’s a film of whimsy but also a lot of sadness.

That Awkward Moment

I feel like I may have seen this film before, it was the peak of dudes centring in romantic comedic bullshit as a group of best buddies trying to better themselves and show a little humanity. When Zac Efron was at the height of his career. “Three best friends find themselves where we’ve all been: at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you must decide “So…where is this going?””

Fighting

When I realised this was Channing Tatum, I decided I needed to give it a shot regardless of plot. Particularly as it’s an old one from 2009 when he was still early career and balanced between comedy and dramas. “In New York City, a young counterfeiter is introduced to the world of underground street fighting by a seasoned scam artist, who becomes his manager on the bare-knuckling brawling circuit.”

Never Back Down

Not dissimilar to the plot of Fighting, but I have definitely seen this one. It’s the least popular of the film series apparently (even though it’s… the first of the series?) but I saw this back in the day of no streaming services, what was on TV was limited, and a lot of the times the DVDs in charity shops or Blockbuster were REALLY RANDOM? This might have been my first introduction to Amber Heard as an actress as well. I dunno, there’s something about fighting films. “A frustrated and conflicted teenager arrives at a new high school to discover an underground fight club, and meets a classmate who begins to coerce him into fighting.”

If I Stay

You might have noticed that the free film choice is a bit old and a bit random, like the charity shops and blockbusters I mentioned. So this film is when Chloë Grace Moretz was at the height of her career, starring in many films after being cast for so long as the sassy punky sidekick kid, she was taking on leading dramatic roles where she was usually highly desired to some capacity. “Life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined. The choice is hers if she can go on.”

The Birdcage

I was surprised and pleased to see this film and other Robin Williams’ films available for free. But particularly this one, as it is one I didn’t watch until later on in my life about tqo queer men and the queer scene. It’s gorgeous, it’s flamboyant, it’s Q U E E R. And Robin Williams was proud to play a queer man and bring attention to queer stories with his name as such a massive star at the time. “A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée’s right-wing, conservative parents.”

Patch Adams

I am more familiar with Patch Adams than I am with The Birdcage but even then, I don’t think I watched this until later. It seems like a hopeful story generally but it is actually incredibly sad and somewhat reflects Robin Williams’ life and personality. “The true story of the heroic Hunter “Patch” Adams who’s determined to become a medical doctor because of his desire to help other people. He ventures where no doctor ever ventured before utilizing humor and pathos.”

Sleepover

I don’t think I ever watched this, and this is definitely a film for tweens, but I recognise so many now-big stars from the shots on IMDB like Evan Peters and Sara Paxton who isn’t so big NOW but had a height of film fame soon after this film. There’s also Sean Faris who starred in Never Back Down. Also why is Jane Lynch in this?! “Desperate to improve their social status, four best friends enter into an all-night scavenger hunt against the popular clique in their school.”

Elvira’s Haunted House

I have never seen Elvira anything, only gifs and screenshots on tumblr and on zodiac instagram pages (they almost always associate her with Libra…) so I think it’s time I check it out. It looks campy, it looks creepy for Halloween… perfect. “Spooky hijinks abound when Elvira finds herself spending the night in a mysterious castle en route to 1851 Paris.”

Saved!

I have watched this film once before and only once, it seemingly has a straight forward plot but honestly is goes OFF THE RAILS. Starring the icon who played Joanna Mason in The Hunger Games, Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Heather Matarazzo (who played Lilly in The Princess Diaries), and more, it’s basically about a teenage girl who gets pregnant by her gay boyfriend. “When a girl attending a Christian high school becomes pregnant, all of her former friends turn on her and she is ostracized and demonized.”

Josie and the Pussycats

I have never seen Josie and the Pussycats but it has become such an iconic media point in the 2020’s I see people referencing this film or analysing this film all over the place. And now I know where I can watch it. “A girl group find themselves in the middle of a conspiracy to deliver subliminal messages through popular music.” Always weirdly prophetic.
